Pete Skinner
Pete Skinner, who lives outside Albany,
N.Y., is a professional engineer and energy auditor for the
NYS Energy Smart Program and knows his stuff when it comes to
building designs and efficiencies. As a professor from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, he seeks out cost efficient and green
alternatives to conventional building techniques and considers
them in the context of the Energy Star ratings.
Situation:
Skinner's garage had been ruining the view from his sunroom
for too long-20 years too long. This year he decided to move
it to a new location and, while he was at it, add an office
and a rec. room/workshop below them. He designed the 1300 sq.
ft. building with an eye toward energy efficiency.
"When it comes to energy-saving buildings, I'm about as
tough a customer as you can get," says Skinner, who is
currently working with environmental groups and the State of
New York to develop an enhanced Energy Smart program specifically
targeted to the Adirondacks.
He chose BioBased Insulation, made in part from soy bean oil,
for his garage because he wanted to insulate with an environmentally
friendly product and achieve low air infiltration simultaneously.
He says that the BioBased insulation he used for the walls and
ceiling achieves more than an equivalent R-40 in the ceiling
and R-20 in the walls.
"If you go with a stick frame building and want low infiltration-which
you should-spray foam insulation is one of the quickest, most
reliable ways to do it," he says. "Done right, spray
foam insulation can make for a low infiltration space even before
the sheet rock or interior finishing system is installed."
Skinner saw an ad for BioBased in a publication and realized
he could have the efficient product he wanted and go green too.
He called the Upstate New York dealer, Coler Natural Insulation,
and received a very professional quotation.
"When the job was done, the final bill was right on the
money - and right on the quality!" he says. Subsequent
blower door tests on the space have illustrated that the building
more than met his infiltration expectations.
"The BioBased was cost effective with today's energy prices
and Jim Coler was very professional about understanding my specific
needs and providing a timely quote," says Skinner.
The product was sprayed on a cold day with relatively low humidity,
not the best conditions, notes Skinner, but he was impressed
with Coler's application of BioBased.
"His attention to detail is excellent, starting with the
spotless high-tech rig he custom built for installing BioBased.
It was even more gratifying to see the whole job completed in
less than a day!"
The Result:
"Without reservation, I would recommend BioBased to other
people," says Skinner. "For traditional stick framed
buildings or additions, this is an excellent method to make
homes and other buildings energy efficient and comfortable -
all in one shot at a reasonable price!"
Skinner is the owner of E2G, a company that does energy efficiency
testing of existing homes as well as solar and energy efficiency
design of new ones in collaboration with New York Energy Design
Services.
Alan Farkas
Alan Farkas of Rochester, N.Y. is in
the process of remodeling two rooms in his home-an attached
garage and the baby's room above it. He shopped for alternatives
to fiberglass insulation and ultimately chose BioBased spray
foam insulation for the two rooms.
He chose BioBased because it's a green product and one that
could prevent air infiltration in a challenging spaces. His
house is a uniquely constructed, circa 1930s home with many
roof pitches, unique spaces and one-by-six tongue and groove
pine instead of plywood sheathing. There are seams every six
inches or so and knots which allow air infiltration. BioBased
Insulation seals all of these in one quick application and is
environmentally friendly too. "In the baby's room you could
feel the difference immediately after the BioBased was sprayed,"
he says. As a homeowner who's doing most of the work himself,
he didn't want "to deal with the installation of fiberglass
with all of the fibers around. The BioBased quickly filled all
of those holes for a more effective R-value, limiting air movement,"
he says. "I would absolutely recommend the product; it's good
stuff." In addition to the quality of the product, Farkas is
happy with his experience with Coler Natural Insulation. "Jim
was one of the convincing factors with my choosing the product,"
he says. "He showed up in a timely manner to give me my estimate
and really knows what he's doing."
Quick praises..
Thank you for the recommendation. Coler Natural Insulation
finished the insulation yesterday, on schedule and with very
good results. Kathy and Jim Coler were very helpful with expert
advice, scheduling and furnishing the compliance information
I requested. Although my addition was much smaller than their
market emphasis, I am sure they gave me the same attention as
a major project. Their crew was very professional and neat.
They improved on my original request by adding foam insulation
in the rim joist area.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for either planning or
installation.

In addition to the quality of work
and the tenacious work ethic, I am most impressed with the way
Jeremy and his co-worker ( I am sorry to have forgotten his
name) worked together with one another. I have never in the
26 years of being a homeowner seen two crew members work so
cordially and considerately towards one another. Witnessing
the mutual respect and kindness they demonstrated towards one
another was truely remarkable. They behaved the way I would
hope my own adult children would. In addition to the product,
Coler has much to be proud of in the people you hire!

I finally got my NYSERDA rebate check
today. Thanks for your help.
The insulation is performing well. We went away over thanksgiving.
The room temperature in the house took five and a half days
to drop 8 degrees F. The furnace did not run at all for those
days. Comfort has improved.

Coler called us back promptly and
met with us to review methods/benefits of insulating a to-be
conference room in a church annex(very old)renovation project.
Quoted promptly and fully; were ready to go when agreed; set
up, applied per spec and as agreed, cleaned up to as-before
condition. Result afforded flexibility and allowed an easier
re-do of existing structure's room, made the inside space much
quieter, and did away with any concerns re adequacy of roof
insulation.

We would highly recommend Coler Natural
Insulation to any prospective customers. We appreciated being
able to get expertise from someone with an engineering background
as opposed to a sales rep. Jim even offered helpful advice on
improvements that were more cost effective for us to do than
for Coler to do. He also shared product recommendations and
energy saving ideas he has implemented for himself. When we
ran in to some issues the response was prompt, thorough, and
completed resolved the difficulty we were having. It is nice
to deal with folks who have a high degree of integrity and professionalism!

Well first off let me tell you how
pleased we are with the soy based spray on insulation we had
done last year by you guys. Our house is warmer. The attic is
warmer in the winter and cooler in the heat of summer.........which
our attic based AC loves. Our RGE budget amount even went down
a good chunk this year. So you could say we are pleased as well
as grateful for a job well done.

You must hear often but I want to
add my additional appreciation about how great they were. Sean
and his co-worker were informative, courtesous and as neat as
can be expected. Thanks and with every hope we can feel the
difference in your utility bills.
Chris
Kathy and Jim, I am pleased to report that with all the snow so far this year, we have seen little in the way of icicles, especially on the back of the house where they used to be a big problem. Thank you again for the work you did in our home. Best wishes for a good year ahead despite the economic downturn. Regards, Tom
Hi Jim and Cathy, I just wanted to give you an insulation report. As usual, your guys were a pleasure to work with. As you know, today was a hot sunny day. Usually the lodge would heat right up. I still have scaffolding in the main room and it gets unbearable to be near the ceiling after 12:00 noon on a day like today. I kept the old drfty doors and windows shut all day today. The morning started at 67 degrees on the scaffolding. The highest it got was 69 today! I also layed the thermometer on the new metal roof where I was working. The temp was 128 degrees and it was 112 or so under the Low E wrap below the metal. Needless to say, I'm very impressed. Thanks again guys, Tom Kopf
We selected this company based on their knowledge, candor and
professionalism as well as their professional and informative
website. Also, I only do business with owner/operators as opposed
to sales organizations. " "I felt the quality of work received
was an expertly and conscientiously applied product" I strongly
feel that I was dealing with a company with integrity and passion
for their product
David Simolo, Cohocton, NY
Yeah, it looks great. It seems to be working great too. The
wind has been blowing here like crazy the last few days and
we don't feel anything inside the house. My father and I are
both recommending your insulation to my brother for when he
builds his house sometime in the near future.
Thanks,
Jason
For what it's worth, I haven't even used 3 tons of coal yet
this year and the propane has not gone on in the house, with
the exception of a weekend we were without power and I hooked
a generator to it as the temperature dipped below 40. The upstairs
is maintaining a 60 degree temperature from the downstairs coal
stove alone, which wasn't the case last year after I installed
it. It's going to be a little complicated figuring year to year
and I'm going to have to spend some time estimating coal use
from last year, but clearly, there are significant improvements
in the efficiency and effectiveness of the heating in the house.
Take care.
